Charging an iPad Air

Karen Jul 08, 2014 04:41AM EDT

I am wanting to make a solar charging messenger bag for my husband and want it to be able to charge an iPad Air.
I was considering the 12 watt solar charge kit but saw a note about needing a laptop kit if the AC charger outputs more than 5volts.
I am pretty sure the iPad Air chargers output 5.2volts
Can you recommend the kit I need?

Hi Karen,

The 12 Watt Kit would certainly work in conjunction with our V39 battery. You could also use the 6 Watt Kit although charge times would be slower and there would be less power storage in the battery (I would go with 12 Watts over 6).

The way the system works is that the panels (6 Volts) charge the battery and the battery outputs 5V USB. Connect to the iPad from the Voltaic battery using the USB cable that comes with the iPad.

In good sun, you should be able to get 1.5 hours of usage for every hour in the sun.
